Overlooking the Ria de Vigo in beautiful Galicia, northern Spain, sits this stately nine-bedroom villa. Originally built in 1910, it has been refurbished with care but retains much of its old-worldly charm and character. Spread over three floors, the villa's lower ground floor is where you'll find the huge, white-tiled kitchen with a six-seater breakfast table. You'll also find an en-suite double bedroom on this floor.

Upstairs, on the ground floor, a formal entrance leads through to an open-plan lounge and dining area. In the lounge, you'll find comfy floral sofas and plenty of antique touches, including mahogany furniture, heavy drapes, period paintings and an open fireplace. From here, step into the dining room and enjoy a meal at the elegant table seating 12 people. Both rooms feature huge windows offering up glorious sea views. You'll also find two light-filled bedrooms on this floor, both with double beds. There's an additional bathroom on this floor with a shower.

From the ground floor, an impressive staircase featuring a glass chandelier sweeps to the first floor and five further bedrooms. The bedrooms are neat and airy and feature a mix of double, twin and single beds. Each room also has a window or balcony that invites you to stop and gaze at the far-reaching mountain or sea views. One bedroom on this floor has an en-suite shower, and there is a shared shower for the rest of the rooms.

While a sense of grandeur rules inside, move outside and delight in the garden's endless natural beauty. Enjoy a morning coffee on the terrace while watching the boats bopping in the Ria de Vigo, or alternatively, head to the swimming pool and enjoy a cool dip, then lounge in the designated chill-out area with a good book. To aid relaxation, there's also a Jacuzzi and barbeque area should you fancy eating al fresco.

With plenty of shady spots, you'll soon feel at peace as you absorb the tranquil surroundings with its colourful flowers, fruit and ornamental trees. There's even a bamboo forest to explore and a small underground grotto too. Kids will also love playing in the miniature house or whiling away the hours in the games room with its table football, billiards and darts board. The small garden apartment is an extra bonus and has a bathroom, kitchen and enough living space for two people to cosy up in front of the TV. Although Villa San Simon is located in a quiet, residential area, it's only a 10-minute drive to the city of Vigo and a 5-minute drive to the shops and restaurants in the town of Redondela. It's also ideally located for outdoor activity with hiking trails, wild beaches and forest parks nearby.

Villa San Simon is located on the banks of the Vigo estuary (Ria de Vigo) in Galicia, on the northern coast of Spain. The villa overlooks the island of San Simon and is sheltered from the ocean by the beautiful Cies Islands. From the property, you can see lines of bateas dotted along the Ria. From these big wooden bateas (rafts), hang ropes where mussels and oysters grow. From the property's terrace, you can watch the mussel boats lifting the ropes and collecting the molluscs. And if that whets your appetite, it's only a short distance to the local tapas bar, where you sample fresh fish straight from the sea.

The surrounding area is also perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in nature and offers plenty of hiking and cycling trails. Walk or ride through the forest parks with their beautiful streams and rivers and soak up the views of the estuary. But for the best view of the Ria de Vigo head to the Monte do Alba Mountain Forest Park, a 25-minute drive from the property. Climb to the top, and you'll be rewarded with sweeping views of Vigo and the ocean.

Back on ground level, the city of Vigo is also worth exploring. Stroll through the Old Town with its art galleries and wicker shops and visit the cathedral dating back to 1811. There's also a Museum of Contemporary Art where you can learn about Galician authors and admire the artwork of upcoming artists. Afterwards, be sure to enjoy a glass of Albarino wine and some tapas at one of the many excellent seafood restaurants. If you want a day at the beach, Samil beach is a good choice and perfect for children of all ages. Located in Vigo, it offers calm waters and a range of water sports, plus cafes and restaurants.

But for a truly memorable day out, head to Vigo's harbour and jump on a boat to the Cies Islands. This little archipelago is a national park and bird sanctuary and is also home to nine fabulous beaches. Rodas beach is the most popular of these beaches – it was once voted the best beach in the world! It's great for the whole family and the perfect place to relax. Children can safely swim in the crystal clear emerald waters or run free on the endless fine white sand. The more energetic can hike along the island's mountainous trails and enjoy spotting the resident yellow-legged herring gulls and guillemots. Once you've exhausted everything that the islands have to offer, enjoy a cool drink and bite to eat at one of the many beachside cafes before hopping back on the boat again.

About the Region & Getting There

About Galicia

Like many parts of Spain, Galicia has its very own identity that has remained intact through its regional dialect and distinguishing culture. Although Galicia is recognised for its holy traditions, we urge budding tourists to also consider its astonishing green countryside & rivers and its UNESCO World Heritage sites. Occasionally you may even hear the gentle tootling of bagpipes, known locally as the Galician Gaita, along this northern corner of the Iberian Peninsula.

You're likely to fly into Santiago de Compostela, which is the capital of Galicia and is probably best known for the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage and its route. Many of the travellers embark on this journey by foot and tend to be mesmerised by this fine city at the end of their trek. Casco Viejo, or the Old Town, is a good place to end or even start your holiday. This area of the city is blessed with markets, restaurants, bars and buildings from a bygone era. After exhausting yourself in the busyness of the city, take a day trip to Praia de Rodas, on the gorgeous Cíes Islands. These small islands, accessible by boat from Vigo, Baiona, or Cangas, have been noted as having some of the best beaches in the world. It has to be seen to be believed!

Galicia is divided into four key regions: A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense and our favourite – Pontevedra. A Galician proverb states that 'Pontevedra gives water to travellers'. We firmly believe this to be true, as this particular part of Galicia has everything a traveller could need for an unforgettable experience and it almost feels like this city is constantly giving back. Whilst you holiday in Pontevedra you will realise that days are structured around mealtime. And why wouldn't they be? With some of the best seafood you will experience in Spain and the noteworthy Albariño wine, you may notice your jeans feeling a little tighter toward the end of your holiday. You will be glad to know that your waistline need not be a cause for concern though! Pontevedra is blessed with some of the best hiking trails, medieval monasteries, estuaries, and valleys within Spain. Don't forget about the coastline either! Rarely you will you find so many empty beaches, so make the most of this privacy and just embrace the nature around you.

Galicia is still an unspoilt part of the world. It has everything a diverse group of friends & family need to have a glorious adventure.

Getting There

Galicia is served by either Santiago de Compostela Airport, A Coruña Airport, or Vigo Airport. Various train lines connect the main cities and towns of Galicia to other destinations in Northern and Central Spain (and even Portugal). There are also vairous coach routes that you can take throughout the region and to other cities in Spain.

From the UK:
Direct flights are available from London with easyJet, Ryanair, Vueling, and many others. Although, travellers should be aware that Vigo Airport only receives domestic flights, so a stopover is needed if you wish to travel to this airport. Chartered flights are also available from several other UK airports.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Villa San Simon has plenty of space for all the family to enjoy, and children will especially love the garden room full of kids' games. They can try their hand at billiards, play darts or enjoy a round of table football. But when the sun is shining, they'll want to head outside and splash in the huge swimming pool, explore the small underground grotto, or play in the miniature house. The vast garden has several levels, and its bamboo forest and ornamental trees make it ideal for a game of hide and seek. After a day of playing in the garden, gather the family, throw some fresh fish on the barbeque and dine al fresco on the terrace. Afterwards, the kids can kick back in the lounge and watch their favourite programme on the television.

The villa is also ideally placed for those who enjoy nature, and the whole family can take advantage of the natural surroundings. Spend the day hiking through the forest parks or exploring the area on a bicycle. Be sure to also stop at one of the many tapas bars. Galicia is famous for its seafood, and kids might like to try mussels, clams, or even octopus!

For a fun day out, head to the city of Vigo. It's a 15-minute drive from the villa and has plenty of art galleries, museums, and historic buildings that kids of all ages can explore. There's even a zoo located just outside the city centre. Here children can learn about the ecosystem and view lions, tigers and bears, plus spiders and reptiles. Alternatively, pack a picnic and drive 25-minutes to Monte do Alba Mountain Forest Park. Let the kids run free or climb to the seventeenth-century chapel at the top of the mountain and soak up the stunning views of the estuary below.

For a day at the beach, it's a 15-minute drive north from the property to Praia de Cesantes. A family-friendly, sandy beach, it's a good place for a swim with calm waters and clear blue waters. Older kids can also try their hand at surfing and windsurfing. But the best beaches in the area are definitely to be found on the Cies Islands. This little archipelago can be reached by boat from Vigo harbour, and on the way, kids will enjoy the thrill of spotting dolphins in the water. Once at the islands, head to Rodas Beach. An unspoilt paradise, it is a good spot to relax, and children can safely swim here or enjoy snorkelling in the waters teeming with sea life.

  • Enjoyable and successful stay!

    on 08/08/2022

Our holiday was very enjoyable and successful. The villa is beautifully located with very good facilities, the owner and staff were welcoming and very helpful; a drainage problem in one of the toilets was solved promptly and efficiently. I would recommend the Villa for a large size group.
