THE REGION
The traditional town of Artá sits in the middle of a large valley at the foot of a small mountain in the northeast of Mallorca. The town rigorously clings to its heritage, making few concessions for tourism. The parish church, Transfiguracio del Senyor, dominates the largely pedestrianised centre and skyline of Artá.
Artá’s biggest attractions relate to the cultural heritage of the area. The most popular is undoubtedly the Sanctuary de Sant Salvador and the fortified battlements that surround it.
There are beaches within a short hike of town, and many who brave the walk say it’s just as beautiful as the beach itself. You are also within easy reach of the many attractions the northeast of the island has to offer, such as the Coves del Drac.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesEs Talaiot is a great property for families, the secret pool and cool, serene interior are the perfect balm after long sunny adventures near and far exploring this magical natural region.
The northeast coast has a huge selection of well-kept sandy beaches, and there are multiple beaches suitable for kids and family days out. The Blue Flag beach of Cala Millor is an exceptional beautiful large sandy beach stretching nearly 2km with plenty of water sports available and a lovely long palm-lined promenade with shops, bars and restaurants there is plenty to entertain the kids, and the beach is very popular.
For a quieter experience, the sandy beach of Canyamel on the east coast is a little tropical paradise in the middle of a nature reserve; the 300m beach is safe and shallow and perfect for the little ones. Another charming option is to visit the coastal village of Colonia De Sant Pere. With a small sandy beach and a traditional style harbour and promenade, and predominantly Spanish visitors, this is an authentic gentle experience a world away from resort life.
One of the biggest attractions on the northeast coastline is The Caves d’Arta. This is going to be a different and magical experience for all the family.
These thousands-year-old caves are a spectacular sight with a network of underground caverns created and adorned with countless stalactites and stalagmites of imaginative shapes. Guided tours are available every half an hour from 10:00 throughout the year and last around 45 minutes and include a light and music show; note there is a hike of approximately 1.5 km, and it's worth booking in advance as very popular.
For budding cyclists and walkers, Arta offers a fantastic trail. The Greenway links the towns of Son Servera, Arta, San Llorenc, Son Carrio and Manacor together. This 29km route crosses into all the beautiful towns across the northeast coast, with plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat or drink - Originally designed as a railway, but now converted to a flat walkway for all to enjoy, it is the perfect way to explore this corner of Mallorca.
This region is wonderful for kids to engage with outdoor living, be it hiking, biking, swimming or climbing; this is the chance to get back to nature in a stunning location.
