THE REGION
Pollensa, in the north of the island, is an ancient town of attractive narrow streets and an impressive main square, lined with cafés, restaurants and bars, and is just a few kilometres from Port de Pollensa.
The town has several places of interest to visit, including the Roman bridge, signposted ‘Pont Roma’, which is still in use, and the Puig de Pollensa – a small mountain topped by a monastery just outside the town. Here we provide all the information you want to know to make the most of this relaxed yet culturally satisfying inland town.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesPollensa showcases a wide assortment of alluring attractions, making this a suitable location if you are travelling with children. The Pollensa Museum is a free attraction, which is perfect if you are travelling on a budget. The origins of this establishment date back to the 16th century, when it was used to host an abundance of ornate Gothic altarpieces. During the 1960s, this museum received a large amount of praise from acclaimed institutions, especially during the Summer Exhibition of Painting. The museum was finally founded in 1975 and now presents a wide range of Buddhist mandalas and the works of Atilio Boveri. The Pollensa Museum is just a short walk away from the town centre and is open every weekday from 10 am till 2 pm.
If your children are keen explorers, the Alzinaret Caves are a must-see attraction. Based just over 10-minutes away from Pollensa, these caves allow guests to see an assortment of artefacts dating back to the Middle Bronze Age. Although these structures seem to back to 1600 BC, they were first discovered by Wilfred Hemp in 1927. In order to honour his work, there is a cave named Number 7 of Hemp in his memory. There are around 14 caves to uncover, all of which offer a unique structure and journey for guests to experience. It should also be mentioned that there are a collection of benches outside for guests who do not feel comfortable going into the caves.
Puig de Maria is one of Pollensa’s most significant religious landmarks, allowing guests to uncover the long-lost history of the region. At the very top of the 330-metre peak is a quaint monastery that dates back to the 14th century; throughout its time, this monastery had experienced many changes, especially in the 18th century when it went under an extensive renovation process to better fit in with the styles seen during the Gothic Revival. Guests can explore the monastery and revel in the authentic and highly-preserved fixtures that sit inside. Puig de Maria is just over 5-minutes away, and it is said to take around 30-minutes to climb to the top, making it a very accessible journey for a majority of guests.
