Ideal for Kids Walk to Village

You will feel a little as though you have stepped back in time at Casa La Bassa. The villa will give you a real feel for Mallorcan village life. It is rustic and traditional, though extremely well taken care of. Situated in the charming village of Muro, a fifteen-minute drive to the popular beach resort of Can Picafort, you will get a taste of real Mallorca.

The village square is dominated by the village church and park where the locals walk and pass the time when they are not working. With 4 atmospheric bedrooms, the villa sleeps 8 guests so is ideal for a large family, two families or a group of friends.

Muro is a picturesque, traditional rural village with sandstone buildings. It dates back to 1232 with the Christian conquest. Moneylenders were allowed to live in Muro as a token of gratitude for helping to finance the war effort, so it was a town of wealth and privilege. It is within an area known as the ‘vegetable basket’ of Mallorca with a rich tradition of farming. You will find plenty of fresh produce, especially at the Sunday morning market, and thriving wine industry.

Casa La Bassa is a 4 bedroomed village townhouse. It boasts some wonderful views to the Bay of Alcudia, Playa de Muro and Can Picafort from the bedrooms and entrance. The villa is finished to a high level with modern ensuite bathrooms. The stone walls and beamed ceilings are very atmospheric.

The old-world charm runs throughout the villa and outside into the courtyard. The spacious living room is open to the traditional dine-in kitchen. They open to the courtyard garden with an inviting pool, grass banks, sun loungers and a covered dining area. There is a freshwater well, a large wood-burning barbecue and an enclosed beamed summer kitchen for fabulous summer meals.

The 4 bedrooms are lovely. Two have kingsize beds, one has a queen-size bed, and the other is a twin bedroom. They all have lovely, modern bathrooms. The upper terrace has casual seating, a parasol and wonderful views over the pool and terrace.

Muro is so charming with its sandstone architecture and narrow streets. The Sunday market is lively and colourful, with much fresh produce. There is sometimes a Wednesday evening market on Muro beach which sells local arts and crafts. The village administrates the beach resort of Playa de Muro. Muro has a quaint museum, the Museo Etnlogico de Muro. It features displays of traditional, rural life in Mallorca during different periods in history.

The Catalan-Gothic church San Joan Baptista is 400 years old and replaced the old church. There is an active bull ring which was built in 1910 from locally quarried stone. You will enjoy relaxing at one of the many street cafes.

If you would like to sample some of the local wines, you can stop at the excellent Bodega Butxet vineyard on the way to Can Picafort. It is a hidden gem where you can taste the delicious Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah wines.

Playa de Muro is a short drive away on the coast and quieter than the main Can Picafort beach. Can Picafort is full of sun, sand and summer buzz. It is well developed so you would be forgiven for thinking that it is purpose-built though there is indeed very ancient history. The unspoilt beach of Son Serra de Marina is close by. It attracts surfers and adventure sports enthusiasts. If you want to try out some windsurfing, hang gliding and kite surfing, this might be the place to come. There is a 10-day fiesta during the last week of July and the first week of August with sporting events, live music and other celebrations.

Arta is a lovely place to visit. The town rigorously clings to its heritage with the Transfiguracio del Senyor parish church dominating the centre and skyline of Arta. Arta is overlooked by the fortified Santuari de Sant Salvador, which is a major attraction to tourists.

Muro is a great place to have a mix of beach days and exploration days to historic towns and villages, including the Old Towns of Alcudia and Pollensa, and it is easy to visit the Caves of Drac.

THE REGION

Sa Pobla is a small municipality with around 12,000 inhabitants, which is situated in the centre of Mallorca, between Inca and Alcúdia. Sa Pobla is known for its agriculture and the humble potato, in particular, gets a lot of attention here as it is exported to many countries and a festival is even held in its honour each year.

The town of Sa Pobla is partly on the Albufera nature reserve (Parc natural de s'Albufera de Mallorca), a protected wetland area. The nature reserve is particularly good for bird watching as well as hikes and walks.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Children will love the beaches that are within a short driving distance from the villa. Playa de Muro, Can Picafort and Son Serra de Marina are all excellent for beach days. It also isn’t far to drive to the wonderful Port Alcudia beach. There are many watersports on offer at the beaches.

You can walk from Can Picafort to the Necropolis de Son Real which is an ancient burial site of approximately 300 people. It is a large site with impressive graves, built around 7th century BC. Sometimes you might find an archaeological dig going on.

La Reserva Galatzo is a fascinating nature reserve deep in the Tramuntana mountains near Puigpunyent. This unique, natural wonderland is very special. A 3.5km long loop road winds past grottoes, waterfalls and a variety of wildlife including goats, ostriches, emus, deers, wild donkeys and peacocks.

There are raptor and bird of prey displays twice daily and many opportunities to rock climb, pass swinging bridges, whizz down the zip wire and slide down canyons on the adventure circuit. There are well-marked paths, and the barbecue area is a great place to finish.

There are 3 thrilling waterparks in Mallorca. The Western Water Park is in Magaluf. The largest is Aqualand in El Arenal, but closer to the villa is Hidropark in Alcudia. Hidropark boasts some thrilling slides, bouncy castles, paint-balling, giant floating balls and trampolines.

The Parc Natural de S’Albufera is wonderful for gentle bike rides and birdwatching expeditions. 303 species of birds have been recorded, 64 of which breed within the park’s boundaries. Entrance to the park is free, but permits must be obtained from the visitor centre.
