Seaside Sanctuary

Nestled on the shores of a sandy beach which is backed by tropical vegetation yet is just 10km away from the hustle and bustle of the historic city of Galle and its famous fort, Seaside Sanctuary is a beautiful place to stay for those wishing to explore all sides of Sri Lanka’s Southern Province.

Seaside Sanctuary is a newly built home. However, looking at it, you would not know this due to the love and care taken to incorporate traditional Sri Lankan design and aspects of Dutch colonial architecture. Throughout the house, you will see hand-made tiles, custom-built teak furniture, and antique pieces that work harmoniously together to create a space brimming with modern luxury.

The home has plenty of room to accommodate up to eight guests over two floors, making it an ideal choice for friends or a family exploring the island. After passing through the lush green garden, you enter the home through the stunning façade, which resembles an old Dutch church. The living spaces are on the ground floor, while the bedrooms are on the first floor, offering panoramic views of the Indian Ocean.

The living spaces here are bright and airy, with large windows and doors opening onto the garden and gorgeous furnishings, including comfy sofas and a long dining table. A smaller TV lounge awaits those looking to relax and watch a film or flick through the library of books which line the walls. There is even a games room equipped with a pool table so you can play a few rounds of pool in the evenings. Also, on this floor, you will find a well-equipped kitchen, the domain of the home’s brilliant chef, who can create many dishes, from breakfasts to Sri Lankan feasts.

Upstairs are four large bedrooms, each with access to a terrace that lines the whole building and overlooks the ocean below. The bedrooms are all the perfect place for a restful night’s sleep as you can listen to the sounds of the crashing waves as you doze off on the comfortable beds. There is a master bedroom with a seating area and a feature bath in the en-suite bathroom, as well as three spacious double rooms with en-suites offering walk-in showers.

Enveloping the home is a vast, lawned garden which leads directly to a breathtaking sandy beach, which you will often have to yourselves. The garden is a lovely place to spend lazy afternoons lounging in the sun and swimming in the private pool as you gaze out to sea. Outside is a large, covered dining terrace with an outdoor kitchen area for dining outdoors on a balmy evening.

When you wish to explore some islands, there is plenty to see and do within easy reach of the villa. Just a stone’s throw away from the house, there are beaches, a turtle hatchery and a selection of restaurants. Plus, within 10km, you have the amenities and attractions of the city of Galle, including the incredible Galle Fort historic area and the lighthouse.

Further afield, you can also take day trips to tea plantations or to one of the protected national parks for a safari, where you will see some of the island’s animals, such as the Asian elephants.
