Tucked away in a 2-acre coconut garden in the secluded village of Pottuvil, Surf Point Villa is a 4-bedroom retreat accommodating 8 guests on Sri Lanka’s southeastern coastline famed for its surfing breaks.
Amidst a gorgeous coconut grove, guests stepping into Surf Point Villa step into a sumptuous world of island beauty made elegant with vaulted wooden ceilings, coastal accents, and sophisticated furnishings. Decorated in soothing tones and flooded with natural light streaming in off the Indian Ocean, the villa’s spaces boast a bright and airy atmosphere that epitomises the beachy indoor-outdoor lifestyle.
In addition to a living area boasting plush sofas and a shared terrace, the villa is comprised of four bedrooms- two large chalet rooms on the ground floor, and two further rooms upstairs. Each room boasts its unique character, featuring locally inspired decor that pays homage to the vibrant culture of Sri Lanka.
Boasting beachfront access, the 47sqm chalet rooms have king-sized beds, dedicated workstations, unobstructed ocean views, private outdoor terraces, a range of modern amenities and ensuite bathrooms with opulent rain showers.
Ascending the stairs reveals two more comfortable bedrooms overlooking a serene ocean punctuated by tall palms. These 45sqm rooms each consists of twin beds, cosy seating areas, dedicated workstations, private balconies (with sun loungers), and ensuite bathrooms with walk-in rain showers.
Step outside onto the expansive terrace where an al fresco dining setting awaits and golden sands are only a few steps away. Surrounded by lush greenery, this outdoor oasis offers a refreshing respite from the warm Sri Lankan sun. - Please note that the swimming pool is unfenced so please be mindful of children at play.
- Surfing beaches commonly have big waves and strong currents, so make sure kids are not left unsupervised when swimming in the sea.
- While daily breakfast is included in the price, the cost of lunch & dinner service is charged separately based on your menu choices. This is to be paid upon departure (cash or card accepted).
- There is a set menu for lunch & dinner, though the chef is happy to take requests with prior notice.
- Please note that a couple of friendly dogs roam the grounds.

But in the resort grounds of Surf Point Villa there are also a lot of great facilities to keep you occupied when you’re not catching waves - starting with the sumptuous swimming pool, a games room, and even cooking lessons at the nearby Urani Village.
When it comes to surfing, there is no shortage of amazing breaks close to Surf Point Villa, including the famed Arugam Bay Point Break, Pottuvil Point, Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, Crocodile Rock, Sangamankanda Point, and Okada. There are also surf boards and surf lessons available.
The area has fantastic opportunities to witness some of Sri Lanka’s amazing wildlife. Indeed the grounds of Surf Point Villa are home to the majestic Brahminy Kite, a family of mongoose, and occasionally even an elephant! But that’s only scratching the surface, to witness even more wildlife make your way to the nearby Pottuvil Lagoon, Kumana National Park (famed for its birdlife), Lahugala National Park (one of Sri Lanka’s eastern elephant corridors), or Gal Oya National Park.
For those looking to immerse themselves in Sri Lanka’s rich religious culture and history, guests can visit Magul Maha Viharaya, a historic temple that once hosted an ancient royal wedding, or the Kudumbigala Monastery (Sri Lanka’s only cylindrical dagoba), located at the top of a stunning rock outcrop.
For those looking for a bit of nightlife, Arugam Bay is known for its laid-back beach bars and cafes that often put on live music. With so many surfers and travellers are around there’s sure to be a party going on.

Best Suited For: All AgesPottuvill and particular Arugam Bay (thanks to its crescent shape) are fantastic beaches for families. This stretch of coastline is known for its pristine, quiet beaches where small shacks serve hot noodles and cold drinks.
Two beaches that are particularly good for the young ones are Peanut Farm Beach and Elephant Rock Beach. The eponymous Elephant Rock itself is relatively easy to climb and a great activity for the family as the summit provides the perfect vantage point for sunset, especially as the light plays off both the ocean and the nearby lagoon and rice fields.
Of course, being a surf town the kids will want to try and catch a few waves, and thankfully there are a number of great beginners spots in addition to the more famous point breaks. Try out Main Point and Baby Point if it’s their first time. There are also plenty of surf schools in the area that will have you surfing like a pro in no time.
Pottuvil Lagoon Safari is situated just 4km from Arugam Bay and is brimming with extraordinary wildlife. A safari is a great option for the whole family as it takes you on a tour of the lush lagoon and mangrove forest which many exotic species call home, including birds, monkeys, and crocodiles.
Kumana National Park (50-minute drive) is also a great option for a safari with its iconic leopards, deer, water buffalos, roaming elephants, and untamed beauty. Remember to eat a big meal before you and bring lots of water as the safari can last up to 6 hours.
