For shopping and the city Fethiye is your go-to destination. If it’s history you are after, you’ve come to the right place, hike the Lycian Way and take a trip through time. Trace the past with trips to Xanthos, the ancient capital of Lycia, and home to the oldest republic in the world, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, discover mosaics, amphitheatres, agoras, and an acropolis. Walk the ancient ruins of Patara, the birthplace of St Nicholas, better known as Santa Claus, and lose yourself its twenty kilometres of sandy beach, home to the famous Turkish breeding turtles. Explore the rock tombs of Tlos, carved in the façade of the ancient city ruins, where you will find a necropolis, Roman baths, and an Ottoman Basilica. Head for Letoon to see the mosaic of the goddess Leto, as you wander through the Temple of Apollo. Whilst the honeycomb cliffs of Pinara hosts nine hundred rock tombs and a theatre in verdant setting. In Fethiye you will find ancient sites dating back to two hundred years BC, the Lycian city of Telmessos, and the rock tombs of Amyntas, as well as sarcophagi, and a theatre immediately opposite the harbour, built to hold six thousand spectators, climb to the top for some fabulous sea views. Bring all of this together in the Fethiye Museum, full of local history, culture, and ephemera, most notably the Trilingual Stele, excavated at Letoon and inscribed with the languages of Lycia, Ancient Greek and Aramaic.

Fethiye
Situated on the ancient city of Telmessos, Fethiye is named after one of its most famous ‘sons’, the aviator Fethi Bey. An earthquake in 1957 damaged central Fethiye, so many of its buildings have been built since then. You can, however, see a Lycian theatre, Lycian tombs (including the rock tomb of Amyntas) and visit the Fethiye museum for more history and artefacts. The centre of Fethiye boasts a covered market area, half of which is given over to the local fish market where you can choose your catch from one of the centre stalls and then get it cooked in any of the surrounding restaurants. The whole of the area is shadowed by the mountain of Babadag where paragliders take to the skies, landing on the beach at Olu Deniz.
Fethiye’s Tuesday market is worth a visit. Traders come from the outlying villages to sell the wares from their smallholdings. Furrowed browed men with cloth caps, and ladies in floral bloomers will sell their produce amongst the lads trying to get you to buy their designer fakes! It’s all in good humour. Try a little bartering and see if you can do some good business. Go to the spice stall and you will get some amazing spices. Look for the Kar Serbeti, like a cinnamon slush or Ayran, a salty yoghurt drink both guaranteed to cool you down.
Olu Deniz & Calis are where people tend to flock for a beach but there are now a few private beach clubs along the coast between Olu Deniz and Fethiye which are worth a visit. There are also beach clubs situated around the lagoon, all with sunbeds, restaurants and drinks service. Hisaronu is more commercialised and hosts a large selection of bars, restaurants and gift shops.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThere’s so much for kids to do in and around the area. Play in the villa’s private pool, there’s no set hours when it’s your own. Nearby is the Orka World theme park, recently opened in 2020, where all the family can enjoy a world of water with lots of slides, splash and play pools, a long lazy river, the adrenaline fuelled Rocket, spectacular shows, and cafes and bars. Take the boat to Butterfly Valley, hop aboard the water taxi from Oludeniz to identify over eighty species of butterflies, as well as other local flora and fauna, late May and early June are the best months, but all year round the area offers nature’s best. Get your bucket and spade and build sandcastles on the nearby sandy beaches, they’ll love the Oludeniz Beach Clubs with easy access into the calm clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea and a whole host family-friendly water sports activities. All aboard one of the many boat trips from Fethiye harbour, a family favourite is the Twelve Island trip, or if you are feeling flush charter your own private yacht for a fabulous lazy day at sea. For the dare devils jumping off of Babadag Mountain and paragliding down to Oludeniz beach is the ultimate thrill, for those not so brave it’s almost as much fun to ride the cable car up the mountain, admire the scenery, and take tea at the top. If underwater is more your thing, there’s the opportunity to snorkel or scuba dive, take a PADI diving course, and discover the delights of a different world. There’s a whole host of organised day trips to take to unique and unusual places; don’t miss a visit to Saklikent Gorge and walk down a fast-flowing river to a cooling waterfall. Discover Dalyan, where you can wallow in mud baths, then sail down the river past ancient rock tombs to Iztuzu, the famous turtle nesting beach. Get on your horse and ride it at the local pony trekking club, hire quad bikes, go off-road driving and ride the dunes or join a jeep safari where you can motor around Mugla, see ancient sites, and enjoy some family fun. No stay is complete without a day exploring the local ghost village, called Kayakoy, once home to both Greek and Turkish families, it was abandoned in 1922, and is now an open-air museum of a village left in ruins. Exercise those little legs with a walk along the Lycian Way, the whole trail would take months to complete, but a short well-worn path will give a flavour of the original Turkey. For those after more adventure white water rafting over thirteen cascading kilometres of the Dalaman River may be just the thing for your older kids. After all of that they might be a bit dirty – don’t worry the whole family can enjoy a traditional Turkish bath, get clean with some serious scrubbing and a lot of bubbles, and maybe a mini massage too in one of the local hammams.
