Location
About the surrounding area of Villa MelekVilla Melek is in Ovacık, a small village in the Fethiye district, Muğla Province, South West Turkey. The villa is set in a rural and quiet spot and is perfect for escaping any hustle and bustle. If you’d like to venture out, it’s only a short walk to the holiday resort of Hisarönü with local restaurants and bars where you can try authentic Turkish cuisine like Iskender Kebab, slices of lamb doner, served on cubes of bread with yoghurt & clarified butter.
The village is on a small plateau at the foot of Babadağ Mountain, a favourite spot for paragliders. You can head to the open-air market on Mondays in Hisarönü where you can pick up fresh local food and handmade goods, or drive ten minutes to Ölüdeniz and swim in the famous blue lagoon or relax on Belcekız Beach, with crystal-clear waters and a soft, white sandy shoreline.
The vibrant and lively town of Fethiye is also just ten minutes away by car, and there you’ll find a shopping centre, alongside more shops, restaurants and cultural sites. Head to the harbour lined with restaurants overlooked by rock tombs including the 4th-century B.C. Tomb of Amyntas. There’s also an amazing fish market where you chose your fish from one of the many fishermen and then have it cooked by one of the surrounding restaurants, served with your selection of mezes you chose from the fridge.
Visit the Tuesday market selling everything from handmade rugs to produce. You can also sample delicious gözleme (thin dough crepes) cooked by headscarfed ladies sat over a steaming griddle and then finish off your day at one of the Turkish Baths for a relaxing massage or detox in the Iznik tiled hamam. Further afield, you can visit Butterfly Valley (about 24km from Fethiye) – a serene nature reserve that’s home to diverse butterfly species.

Fethiye
Situated on the ancient city of Telmessos, Fethiye is named after one of its most famous ‘sons’, the aviator Fethi Bey. An earthquake in 1957 damaged central Fethiye, so many of its buildings have been built since then. You can, however, see a Lycian theatre, Lycian tombs (including the rock tomb of Amyntas) and visit the Fethiye museum for more history and artefacts. The centre of Fethiye boasts a covered market area, half of which is given over to the local fish market where you can choose your catch from one of the centre stalls and then get it cooked in any of the surrounding restaurants. The whole of the area is shadowed by the mountain of Babadag where paragliders take to the skies, landing on the beach at Olu Deniz.
Fethiye’s Tuesday market is worth a visit. Traders come from the outlying villages to sell the wares from their smallholdings. Furrowed browed men with cloth caps, and ladies in floral bloomers will sell their produce amongst the lads trying to get you to buy their designer fakes! It’s all in good humour. Try a little bartering and see if you can do some good business. Go to the spice stall and you will get some amazing spices. Look for the Kar Serbeti, like a cinnamon slush or Ayran, a salty yoghurt drink both guaranteed to cool you down.
Olu Deniz & Calis are where people tend to flock for a beach but there are now a few private beach clubs along the coast between Olu Deniz and Fethiye which are worth a visit. There are also beach clubs situated around the lagoon, all with sunbeds, restaurants and drinks service. Hisaronu is more commercialised and hosts a large selection of bars, restaurants and gift shops.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThe villa has a private swimming pool, which is surrounded by a wall, meaning it's great for younger children to play safely. There’s also a basketball net and plasma TV for days-in entertainment.
With a fantastic selection of water sports including renowned scuba and snorkelling, and top cultural sites, this part of Turkey offers plenty of opportunities to keep kids occupied and happy. There’s a beautiful family-friendly beach at Ölüdeniz lagoon with calm waters – ideal for young swimmers – and water sports such as paddle boats and kayaking. It’s also a protected national park (Ölüdeniz Tabiat Parkı) and there are also a couple of waterparks in the area for a fun day out too.
In Fethiye itself, there are plenty of historic sites with a range of interesting ruins that promise an interesting day out for the kids. There’s Tlos, an ancient ruined Lycian hilltop or you can take a boat trip to Gemiler Island with remains of several 4th-century churches.
For outdoor adventures families can go mountain-biking in the foothills of the mountains or trekking in the nearby Lycian Way. There’s also Butterfly Valley which is home to diverse butterfly species.
