For a relaxing, luxury retreat, head to five-bedroomed Villa Baris on Turkey’s stunning Turquoise Coast: a cosmopolitan, vibrant resort perfect for exploring the timeless beauty of ancient Lycia's pine-clad shores. The villa is in a peaceful spot, set against a breath-taking mountain backdrop, and boasts panoramic views of the sea from your private pool and beautiful outdoor sun terrace.

From the understated sophistication of the interiors to the well-equipped kitchen, the attention to detail is impressive at Villa Baris – and the views even more so, shown off to their best advantage by floor-to-ceiling windows in the living areas and natural-coloured furnishings which create an extra feeling of light and space. The open-plan living/dining/kitchen area boasts cushioned sofas and a plasma TV for sinking into after a day of exploring, and leads straight outside onto the terrace.

Outside, there’s an elegant infinity pool with a cooling Jacuzzi corner – perfect for enjoying the balmy days and evenings. You can while away the afternoon one of the comfortable sun loungers or choose a shady spot to curl up with a good book while enjoying the serene vistas. With an alfresco dining table, and a meze and baklava delivery service too, you’ll be forgiven for never wanting to leave.

The bedrooms are set over three floors and are all equally seductive, stylish and serene. There’s a double bedroom with an en-suite and private balcony, a double bedroom with an en-suite and Jacuzzi bath and a twin bedroom with an en-suite that share a sea-facing balcony. On the second floor, you can choose from the double and twin rooms both with an en-suite and large balcony.

Vibrant Kalkan town is within walking distance of the villa, the starting point for boat trips and excursions, and it also offers an eclectic choice of boutiques and a popular weekly market. The cosmopolitan town lays on a selection of tempting dining options too, including the popular rooftop restaurants and waterfront eateries along a promenade of laid-back cocktail lounges.

Villa Baris is having a small refurbishment during the winter 23/24 and will have an extra bedroom and bathroom added

Villa Baris sits in an enviable position, close to a few restaurants & shops, has great views of Kalkan yet aware from the hustle and bustle of the old town.  The town is a treasure trove of narrow streets, whitewashed houses and inviting boutiques. It's also famous for its harbourside lounge bars and rooftop restaurants serving a variety of delicious food. Look out for Turkish specialities like delightful gozleme (thin dough crepes) with cheese and spinach fillings.

For outdoor exploring, there’s many a trail with notable sites. The best known, and arguably most scenic, is the Lycian Way – a 310-mile tying-together of goat tracks and timeless paths, which traverses deserted beaches, lush forests and soaring peaks, and stops at the ghost village of Kayakoy near Fethiye, with charming abandoned Greek buildings. With the majestic pine tree-lined Taurus Mountains as a backdrop too, families can explore the deeply cut canyons.

Venturing furthering afield you can take a boat trip around the turquoise bays where you can snorkel and visit a mud bath. Or drive to Kevkoa and take a boat to explore the part-sunken ruins of Dolchiste, an ancient town which was destroyed by an earthquake during the 2nd century. You'll also find plenty of beaches & beach clubs in the area for a day of relaxing on white sands or taking part in water sports like scuba diving or waterskiing.

Sandy Patara Beach, a 12-mile long stretch of shoreline is a 20-minute drive and has calm, crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming. Don't forget to stop by the Lycian ruins en route, this is believed to be where the Lycians introduced democracy. This coast is crammed with ancient sites, such as Xanthos, Tlos and Letoon. The bohemian town of Kas is a 30-40 minute drive from Kalkan, while the seaside resort town of Fethiye is a one-hour drive away with plenty more restaurants, shops and fascinating cultural sites to explore.

Kalkan

Kalkan has become boutique resorts, with cobbled streets and converted Greek houses, which belonged to the Greek merchants before the exchange of population in the 1920’s. Once quiet fishing harbours these days you are more likely to see traditional wooden gulets taking tourists to soak up rays on the sparkling turquoise Mediterranean. A boat trip is a must do, from the boat you can snorkel and usually a delicious lunch is prepared on board. Keen walkers should check out the Lycian way for designated walking paths in the area.

You cannot come to this area without spending  some time exploring the many Lycian sights, such as Xanthos, Patara, Myra or the sunken city of Kekova.

Patara is said to be where democracy started (they excavated stone voting block) and is also said to be the birthplace of St Nicholas, who became bishop at nearby Myra. The ruins here include an ancient theatre, city walls, government build and agora. The lighthouse on the site is said to be the earliest of its kind. Visit Patara in the late afternoon and finish the trip with a drink on the sandy beach watching the amazing sunset.

The Salikent Gorge is a great place to visit, especially if you want to cool off in the fresh waters whilst walking up the gorge. For the more energetic there are rafts and rings to ride the flowing waters. Further down you can enjoy a day canoeing toward the beach.

Islamlar sits 8 km above Kalkan. Once the place Kalkan folk went to cool off at one of the trout farms built to make use of the mountain’s springs. Today Islamlar houses many a villa, enjoyed by Istanbul Turks who prefer a holiday in slightly cooler and cleaner air. Here the locals grow grapes and pomegranates, but you’ll mainly see the men sat gossiping next to the local teahouse. The trout farms remain a place to come for a wonderful fresh meal, or a breakfast consisting of fresh local fare. The rocket will be the freshest & most tasty you’ve ever had; and the fresh chips cooked in olive oil take some beating.

By night both Kalkan and Kas come alive. Kas has more of a bohemian feel, people ambling through the cobbled streets, passing the ancient tomb in the street, haggling for textiles, carpets and other goodies, maybe stopping for the traditional Turkish ‘maras’ ice cream, a tulip-shaped glass of tea or a wonderful kebab in the shadow of the mosque. Most of the villas in Kas are just out of town on the Cukurbag Peninsula. A reasonable (5km) taxi or Dolmus (local bus) ride into town. Be sure to try the Piyaz, a white bean salad with tahini sauce.

Travelling along the coast, towards Kalkan you pass the modern marina, the children’s beach park (run by the local hotel school) and halfway to Kalkan the stunning Kaputas Beach, cut in a gorge with all different shades of turquoise in the sea.

Kalkan is a more sophisticated resort, with the villas built onto the mountainside. Evening are spent enjoying the rooftop restaurants, perched on the top of the old ‘konak’ houses. Then wandering to a seaside bar for a cocktail, after shopping for glass lanterns, Iznik pottery, handbags or pestemel towel. Do visit the ‘pastane’, local patisseries which do the most delicious morning pastries and you must try the ‘Gozleme’ pancakes at the Thursday market.

Other things to do in the area include scuba diving as the visibility is excellent, paragliding, horseriding on Patara Beach or kayaking around the sunken ruins at Kekova.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Villa Baris is perfectly placed on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast and has a large private pool, enclosed grounds making it an ideal choice for families with children.

The nearest beach from the villa is a small sheltered bay (Kalamar Beach Club) that has calm crystal-clear shallow waters that’s perfect for younger swimmers. There’s also the opportunity for older kids and adults to take part in water sports like scuba diving, jet skiing and plenty more shallow beaches and coves to choose from in the area. The Kalkan town pebble beach is also popular with families.

The centre of Kalkan is within a fifteen minute walk where you’ll find family-friendly restaurants and cultural sites.  The roads are pretty uneven so if you have a pushchair or little ones we'd suggested taking a local cab. From Kalkan, you can take a boat trip around the bay or book a trip to kayak around the half-submerged ruins near the small island of Kekova. Canoeing is another popular trip for families. You can also head to the bohemian town of Kas, a 30-40 minute drive away, with ancient ruins scattered around the town and a small well-preserved Hellenistic amphitheatre.

A beautiful villa in a great location!

  • Amazing Villa, Good Position

    on 24/09/2019

We stayed at five bedroomed Villa Baris and found it had ample space for ten people. The pool area is spacious and each room at it's own bedroom.
The owner is easily reachable and very reactive.
It's a short (downhill) walk to a handful of restaurants and small foodshops, but we also were give a phone number for a chap, Fatih, who could deliver.
We favoured Indigo beach club, Trio Restaurant on the harbour and closer to the villa The Brothers. We arranged pide deliveries from a local restaurant too.
Taxis were reasonable and easy to get from town.
We lovely Kalkan and hope to be back next year.
