Overview
Characterful three-bedroom Karatavuk Cottage is a hillside haven, surrounded by lush greenery, near Kayaköy in south-west Turkey. Tucked away in the rural countryside, it boasts spectacular views over the valley and the famous abandoned Greek village below. Mediterranean features abound, from the rustic stone walls to the brick-red terracotta tile roof and colourfully patterned Kilim rugs.
Inside, the large open-plan living space has natural wood underfoot and a mixture of classic and contemporary furnishings, including a TV and CD player and two cosy sofas dotted with cushions. The walls are whitewashed for a light feel, while the vibrant fabrics add a playful pop of colour. For a real home-from-home experience, there’s a bright, modern kitchen equipped with an oven, fridge and dishwasher. There’s also a utility room with a washing machine, iron and ironing board.
The villa is set over two beautiful floors, and all the bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and cooling air conditioning. Perfect for families, friends and couples alike, choose from the master with a king-size bed, second bedroom with a king bed or the third room with two single beds. All rooms are equally seductive, stylish and roomy, and have plenty of space for storing your holiday wardrobe.
Stepping outside, you’ll find a lovely patio dotted with potted plants and a table and chairs under cover for al fresco dining. The private swimming pool has panoramic views of the mountains and several cushioned sun loungers and umbrellas for a relaxing afternoon basking in the sun or chilling in the shade. A high stone wall, alongside trees and flowers, ensure the villa is entirely private.
While the days away on the roof terrace, soaking in the peaceful ambience on a wicker or bean bag chair, or you can explore the local surrounds. There are characteristic local restaurants and access to public transport (the Dolmus bus) 60 metres from the villa. The nearest sandy beach is also only 4km, and you’re within walking distance of the ghost village of Kayaköy with plenty of serene walking routes.
What you should know…
- The villa is set over two floors, however there’s a bedroom with two single beds on the ground floor to make life easier for those with limited mobility.
- Surrounded by greenery and a stone wall, it’s secluded and private. However, you’re only a short walk from restaurants, a market and Kayaköy ghost village. Fethiye is a short drive or dolmus ride away with more restaurants, shops and cultural sites.
- It’s on a slight incline so harder walking back. Also, take a torch we found it useful when getting home in the dark.

Location
About the surrounding area of Karatavuk CottageFethiye, in the Muğla province in southwestern Turkey, is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Mediterranean due to its lush vegetation and soft sandy beaches. It’s a charming place where yachts and cocktails cohabit happily with quaint winding streets. Karatavuk Cottage is in rural and sleepy Kayaköy, 8km south of Fethiye, where there’s a famous abandoned Greek village.
Nestled in the mountains and overlooking Kaya Valley, it’s an idyllic spot where you can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Head to the atmospheric ghost village – the inspiration for Louis De Bernier’s ‘Birds without Wings’, novel – and explore the ruined buildings, or visit one of the local restaurants to try a Turkish delicacy like Menemen, scrambled eggs cooked in sautéed vegetables.
You’ll also enjoy a serene and bohemian atmosphere, and if you enjoy walking, there are plenty of routes. Stroll under the canopy of trees and check out Lycian Way – a series of paths from Kayaköy ghost village to remote beaches like Cold Water Bay (a family-friendly coastline with turquoise swimming waters and a sandy shoreline) – or cultural sites like Afkule (around 4km away). They’re monastery ruins dramatically perched on cliff ledges above the Aegean Sea.
In livelier Fethiye Town to the north, visit ancient rock tombs such as the 4th-century B.C. Tomb of Amyntas, carved into the mountains. For foodies, there’s a fish market and other markets that sell everything from rugs to fresh produce. You can sample delicious gözleme (thin dough crepes) here and then visit one of the Turkish Baths for a relaxing treat.

Kayakoy
The "Ghost Town" of Kayaköy was once inhabited by a substantial Greek Orthodox Christian; Artisans who left for Greece in the populations exchange 1923. Many of the old stone houses have been brought back to life and the village is again alive. There is a bohemian feel and a mix of restaurants cater for those enjoying the healthy village air. The cute beach at Gemiler is the closest place for sea swimming here. The area was the inspiration for Louis de Bernieres’ novel Birds Without Wings. Whilst here do try the local Gozleme pancakes.
Local days out include the resort of Gocek along the coast, Tlos ancient site and the Saklikent Gorge. Slightly further afield are Dalyan or going south, Patara for its sandy beach and ruins.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesWith a private swimming pool area, three spacious bedrooms, and an ideal location nestled in the rural south Turkish countryside, Karatavuk Cottage is an ideal choice for older families. Due to the traditional design we'd not recommend it for toddlers and younger children, as there are quite a few drops.
The villa is a short walk from the famous Kayaköy ghost village where you can enjoy exploring the ruined Greek buildings. There are also plenty of walking and hiking routes that take you through olive groves, orchards and quiet lanes lined with authentic stone cottages.
Fethiye town is a short drive where you’ll find family-friendly restaurants and more cultural sites. From there, you can jump on a boat to Ölüdeniz lagoon. It’s a beautiful sandy stretch of shore that has calm waters – ideal for swimmers – and water sports opportunities, such as paddle boats. The famed beach is also a protected national park (Ölüdeniz Tabiat Parkı), and there are also a couple of waterparks in the area for a fun day out too.

Villa is lovely!
Villa is lovely, facilities as advertised. All settled in and enjoying the warm weather. Local shops have pretty much anything you need and reasonable prices.
-
Comfortable Villa
Well decorated and comfortably furnished Villa, in beautiful countryside. Pool and rooftop terrace real bonuses. Plenty of nearby places (car needed for some) to visit such as Tlos (3000yr old city), Saklikent Gorge ( 40 mins from Fethiye), Ölüdeniz beach and of course Kayaköy deserted town. Baris ( local contact ) was v. amenable and helpful in resolving any issues.

Beautiful Villa
The villa is spacious with a lovely mixture of traditional and modern decor. The rooftop terrace is the perfect place to stargaze in the evenings and the views from up here across the valley are stunning! There is plenty to do in the area...lots of lovely local restaurants and further afield Fethiye is great for shopping, eating out or a walk around the harbour. Karatavuk Cottage has WiFi...essential for two teenage boys and the pool is lovely and refreshing! Can't wait to go back!

Excellent Villa, Stunning Views
The whole experience was excellent. The villa is an easy drive from the airport and we were met by Vicky despite the lateness of arrival. The villa of high quality, comfortably furnished with the most spectacular views over the valley. Lots of lovely restaurants, beaches, walking, boat trips, markets and cafés all within a short drive or bus ride of the villa. It's really well equipped and the wifi is a bonus but we spent most of our holiday out and about. Peaceful evenings watching the sunset from the roof terrace were the perfect end to the day! If you want a quiet base I thoroughly recommend Karatavuk Cottage!

Excellent Villa in Charming Valley
I spent a week at this excellent holiday accommodation situated near the centre of Kayakoy earlier this year. My friend and I used the villa as a base for cycling, and we found that there are plenty of interesting 'off road' and 'on road' routes that can be explored within reasonable distance of the location. The villa itself has a well equipped kitchen, light and airy bedrooms with en suite facilities (including lots of hot water for the showers) and a swimming pool, just what was needed for relaxing after a day in the saddle!
All in all a really enjoyable holiday.
