Three Peaks Challenge, Yorkshire
Difficulty: Moderate-hard
Best for: A group activity
It’s no secret that the Yorkshire Dales is considered one of the UK’s most beautiful spots. Offering rolling hill, stunning sunsets and delightfully quaint villages, it’s rural charm at its very best. And it’s also home to one of the best hikes in the UK, the Three Peaks Challenge. The Yorkshire Three Peaks route takes you on a classic trail through three points, Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. This challenging 24-mile route includes 1585m of ascent and the aim is to hike all three in under 12 hours. But if you’re not feeling competitive, you can take it at your own pace and leisurely soak up the countryside views. So, if you’re in the mood for an adventure, get a group together and head up North!
Scafell Pike, Lake District
Difficulty: Hard
Best for: A real challenge
Tourists may flock to the Lake District to gaze at the dazzling lakes but it’s not all this beautiful area has to offer. It’s also home to England’s highest mountain and war memorial, Scafell Pike. Given to the National Trust after WWI in memory of those who died, this 978-metre climb is a real part of British history. There are many routes to choose from when hiking Scafell Pike but be warned, it’s not an easy climb. If you feel up to a steep hike with hard terrain, this is the one for you. But make sure to plan and prepare as there’s a chance of extreme weather conditions and poor visibility.
The Lizard Coastal Walk, Cornwall
Difficulty: Easy
Best for: Sea views
There’s nothing quite like the Cornish coast; glittering blue waters, golden sandy beaches and lush green countryside. But instead of lounging on the beach all day, how about a gentle 4.5-mile walk along the coast? Starting and ending at the charming village of The Lizard Peninsula, the Lizard Coastal Walk will lead you to the treasured Kynance Cove. This leisurely route will treat you to dramatic cliffs, interesting Serpentine Rock formations and quirky caves that can be accessed in low tide. National Trust owned and well signposted, you’ll want to take your camera for these incredible views. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, you might even spot some seals and dolphins en route too!
Thames Path, The Cotswolds to London
Difficulty: Easy-moderate
Best for: A long but leisurely trip
If you’re looking for a longer walk, the Thames Path trail runs 184-miles from the Cotswolds all the way down to London. Although you can choose to do as much or little of the walk as you like, if you do the full trail you’ll find peaceful water meadows, traditional towns and bountiful wildlife. If you like bird spotting, this riverside walk is best in Autumn when they are searching for a mate, whereas flower lovers can go anytime from spring through summer to spot the glorious wildflowers. Lasting around 14 days this gentle trek can be enjoyed by all ages as it’s well marked and easy to reach by public transport.
Tryfan via North Ridge, Snowdonia
Difficulty: Moderate-hard
Best for: Experienced scramblers
If you’re comfortable with getting a bit more stuck into your hike, Tryfan via North Ridge in Snowdonia National Park should be on your list. Although a 4-km hike may not sound like much, the steep ascent and sharp rock face will challenge even the most experienced climbers. That said, this climb is not for beginners and scrambling is pretty much essential on this rocky route. Once you reach the top, the mountain and lake views will make even the trickiest parts worthwhile. Be sure to take a good lunch though, as you’ll definitely be working up an appetite!
